This article explains how to reimport files from MS project or Asta PowerProject, allowing you to sync your native project planning tool with Geniebelt. Your planning tool will in this way continue to control the schedule, while Geniebelt will manage progress tracking and team communication.
Export the progress in Geniebelt to CSV to reimport to your MSP/ASTA:
When using reimport for MSP/ASTA, Geniebelt should be used only for assigning tasks and tracking progress, not for editing dates, or other elements of the project structure.
Note: you cannot undo a reimport!
To perform a reimport, you must be a Project leader or Project admin.
Important before using the reimport feature:
To ensure reimport works correctly, you must use the same file as the initial import, as syncing relies on task IDs from your planning tool. Using a copy or modified file may cause errors. If a task is deleted and recreated, it will not match during reimport due to a changed ID.
When reimporting a file, Geniebelt updates your project as follows:
Group and task structure – The hierarchy of groups and tasks is refreshed.
Update existing tasks – Tasks that match by task ID are updated, including:
Name
Start and finish dates
Working week (will be reset to Monday to Friday)
Dependencies
When reimporting a file, the dependency structure from the file will overwrite any existing dependencies in Geniebelt, including those you may have created in Geniebelt after the initial import.
Geniebelt only supports finish-to-start dependencies, and this also applies when performing a reimport.
Add new tasks – Any task in the reimported file that does not match an existing Geniebelt task will be created as a new task.
Orphaned tasks – Any Geniebelt task that does not match a task in the reimported file will be moved to a group at the bottom of the project called:
"Tasks, milestones, and groups orphaned after re-import [DATE]"
All orphaned tasks will have their dependencies cleared.
This process ensures that tasks are accurately synced based on their task IDs from your planning tool.
When reimporting a file, Geniebelt will not remove nor update the following information added to the schedule in Geniebelt:
Attachments
Assignees
Actual dates
Custom fields input
Tags
Progress
Holiday calendar
You can choose to keep the chosen holiday calendar when doing a reimport.
Baseline
Every time you do a reimport, a new baseline is automatically created.
Following items will be deleted when doing a reimport:
Description
Dependencies created in Geniebelt
Reporting options set to units is changed back to percentage
