Import a programme from MSP and Asta

Written by Camilla Lekman Hansen

You can start building your project by importing an existing programme file from MS project or Asta PowerProject.

Supported file types:

Asta Powerproject 14.0.3

Microsoft Project 2007

Supported

.pp - Asta 14.0.3, 14.0.2, 14.0.1, 13.0.04 files

.pp - Easyplan 7, 6, 5, 4, 3 files

.mpp - MS Project files

.xml - Extensible Markup Language data files

Unsupported (import will fail)

.pp - Asta SaaS Subscription (Cloud) files

.p3b - Primavera P3 files

.xer - Primavera project files

.mpt - MS Project template files

.pdf - Portable Document Format files

.xps - Microsoft XML Paper Specification files

If you import a newer version of the files listed above, the upload may fail. In that case, try converting them to an older version and uploading again.

Data imported into Geniebelt

Geniebelt will first import the group and task structure. It will also bring in the task name, start and finish dates, and progress percentage.

Dependencies: Currently, Geniebelt only supports finish-to-start dependencies. By default, all other types of dependencies are ignored. You do have the option to import them, but they will be converted to finish-to-start upon import. We recommend importing only finish-to-start dependencies for best results.

Scheduling: All tasks will be imported as manually scheduled, regardless of their current state in your file.

Assignees: Geniebelt will invite and assign tasks to users if an email address is provided in the assignee field of your imported file.

Holidays: Public holidays are disabled on import. You can re-enable them in the project settings after import.

Below are task features that are modified when they are imported into Geniebelt.

Task feature

Task duration in hours are changed to equivalent days

Below data types are not supported by Geniebelt and are ignored when imported into Geniebelt:

  • Baseline (we create a new baseline for the import, see below. Note that the baseline timestamp is always in UTC.)

  • Critical path

  • Task durations (see table above)

  • Calendar (can be added afterwards)

  • Working week (set to default Monday to Friday)

  • Resources

Reimporting your Project File

If you don’t want to edit tasks in Geniebelt but continue using your existing project management software, you can periodically reimport your project file to synchronize changes and keep your Geniebelt project up to date.

To use the reimport feature, you must keep the original file you imported so Geniebelt can correctly match updates with your project.

Before you use the reimport feature, please read this article.
