Export progress and links to MSP, Asta and P6

Written by Camilla Lekman Hansen

If you use MS Project, Asta, or P6 and have imported your project into Geniebelt, you can export the progress percentages of your tasks and update them in your scheduling software. This helps keep your project files up to date.

You can also export unique links for each group and task in your Geniebelt project. These links let you open a specific group or task directly in Geniebelt from your scheduling software, giving you quick access to the information you need while planning.

Export Progress

Download a CSV file of the project in Geniebelt

When downloading the CSV file, make sure to select Advanced export (incl. groups, task URL and import ID).

Convert to Excel, then select and copy the entire progress column, except the header. This way it will match the column in MS Project, Asta and P6.

To paste the progress percentages, select the entire column and simply paste.

Asta

MS Project

P6

The process with P6 is a bit different. Instead of pasting the data directly into P6, you will first need to export your P6 project as an excel file. Once you open the excel file, you can then paste the Geniebelt data into the relevant columns. Then P6 allows you to import the excel file to update your programme with the new percentages.

You can see a video here which shows these steps.

Adding Geniebelt URL's

You can also paste a unique link to each Geniebelt task and group within your native programme. This will allow you to easily open a task to review the notes while working in your other programme.

  • First download the CSV file of your project from Geniebelt, like described above.

  • Copy the entire Geniebelt URL column, except for the header.

  • To paste the URL's, you will need to create a new column in your native programme.

MS Project

Create a new column and select Hyperlink. Then select the first row of that column and paste the percentages you copied from the Geniebelt CSV.

Asta

Asta Powerproject allows you to create User Fields so you can define a specific column for storing Geniebelt URL.

First, create a user field, and then within a blank column, select:

Add Column > User Fields > Attachments

The Attachments column is not available by default, so it must be created manually before it can be used.

To paste URL, select the entire column without header and simply paste.

P6

P6 allows you to create User Defined Fields (UDF) so you can define a specific column for storing Geniebelt URL.

  1. Create a UDF in P6 that will store the Geniebelt URLs. Read this article if you want to know how to create UDFs in P6 (same way you create UDF for Tags).

  2. Make sure this UDF is included in your export template. If it is not, edit the existing template and add the UDF (for example, an "Attachments" field), or create a new template that includes it.

  3. Make sure the UDF is included in the project.

  4. Export the programme from P6 to Excel.

  5. Paste the Geniebelt URLs into the UDF column in the Excel file.

  6. Save the Excel file.

  7. Import the updated file back into P6.

Please note: Before pasting, please double check that you have made no changes within your native programme so that the groups/tasks structure is different. Otherwise, the percentages and URL's wont match the right tasks.
